How to Care for Your Knitwear (So It Lasts You for Seasons to Come)

There’s nothing quite like pulling on your favourite wool jumper as the chill sets in. Whether it’s a chunky cable knit or a fine merino layer, good knitwear is an investment — and it deserves a little extra love.

Here are our top tips for keeping your knits in beautiful condition all winter (and for many winters to come):

1. Wash Gently — and Less Often

One of the best things about wool? It’s naturally antibacterial, meaning it doesn’t need to be washed after every wear. In fact, most wool pieces only need a proper wash once or twice a season. If it’s not stained or smelly, skip the laundry and simply hang it outside for a natural refresh.

When it is time for a wash, use cool or lukewarm water and a mild wool detergent. We always recommend hand washing to preserve the shape and softness. Gently press the water through the fabric, avoid rubbing or wringing, and lay flat to dry.

2. Store Folded, Not Hung

Hanging your knitwear can cause stretching, especially in heavier pieces. Instead, fold your knits neatly and store them in a drawer or on a shelf. If you’re putting them away for the off-season, store them in a breathable garment bag with a lavender pouch to keep pests at bay and your knits smelling fresh.

3. Tackle Pilling with Ease

Pilling (those little fuzz balls that appear with wear) is completely normal — especially in natural fibres like wool and alpaca. The good news? It’s easy to fix.

Use a knitwear comb or an electric pilling comb to gently remove pills and keep your knits looking as good as new. Just a few swipes and your jumper is refreshed.

4. Spot Clean for Small Spills

Dropped a splash of coffee or a dab of sauce? No need to throw the whole jumper in the wash. Spot clean with a gentle cloth and cool water, using wool-friendly detergent if needed. Always dab, don’t rub.

5. Refresh Naturally

Sometimes your knit just needs to breathe. Hanging it in fresh outdoor air can release odours and restore softness without the stress of washing. Bonus points for a sunny, breezy day.

Wrap Up Warm, the Right Way

Looking after your knitwear isn’t hard — it just takes a little mindfulness. Treat your wool garments with care and they’ll reward you with years of comfort, warmth, and timeless style.
